August is a special month for me.
August has always held a lot of memories for me. After all, it’s my birthday this month, in fact, it is today. A day I’ve celebrated in all manner of ways over the years, yet as I get older, the ways have changed.
Today is a very different day from any other; not only am I working on my birthday for the first time in 45 years, but I’m celebrating a new identity.
It seemed appropriate to save this big into my birthday, to truly talk about my new shamanic name, as I am reborn into service for the greater good, to serve, to support, to honour and to guide. To be there for those when they need it, in whatever capacity that may take.
When I took part in my vision quest last month, my Maestra journeyed to retrieve my new name, one that has resonated with me in a way I never knew it would.
I entered the vision quest, James Michael Shields, and emerged as Mojave Sky Hawk (pronounced Mo-ha-vee). When I heard my name, I was moved to tears; it felt like a remembrance of who I am, who I have been, and who I’ll always be.
The meaning beyond my new name
Stepping into my true shamanic identity has given me the clarity of mind and vision so often clouded with self-doubt. Knowing the path and walking the path are two very different things, and it felt like I’d finally found an even footing on my path to shamanic wisdom.
The following passages were given to me by my Maestra in order to understand my name, my purpose and my true calling.
She wrote: “Your purpose as Mohave Sky Hawk is to embody vision, inspiration, and guidance.
You are one who soars high to see the broader landscape, perceiving connections that others may miss. When all seems barren, you can offer diversity and flourish in the sands of time. You see beyond the desert.
You are gifted with foresight and perspective, able to rise above confusion and illuminate the way ahead, not just for yourself but for those who walk beside you.
Your medicine is clarity: you help others lift their gaze from the immediate, from their entanglements and distractions, and see the wider patterns at play in their lives.
Like the hawk, you remain deeply attuned to the earth even as you fly, a reminder that spiritual insight must be grounded, and that true wisdom holds both sky and soil in equal measure.
You inspire courage in others to trust their own path, to seek higher vision, and to honour their inner knowing.
Your presence is a beacon, a living invitation to rise, to expand, to trust the wind beneath one’s wings and the calling of Spirit above all else.”
Your role as a medicine man is to create a tribe of energy and shamanic power. You are a light in many people’s darkness, fly above the affray and call to Hawk to help you. Mohave Hawk’s calling is to be an inspirer, a seer, and a guide, someone with sharp perception and the capacity to lead others toward greater clarity and spiritual expansion.
You must collect sand and have this on your altar, then find a hawk and connect; this bird is waiting for you.”
For my birthday, I have been gifted a hawk experience, one which I am excited to undertake and find my connection with the beautiful spirit of Hawk. This path has been a hard one; I’ve faced many challenges, setbacks and obstacles, yet I have also found a lot of love, power and wisdom in the journey. More so now than ever, I am sure I am walking with authenticity and integrity.
